Sexuality in the History of Methodism

Sexuality in the history of Methodism. It is important to understand our Methodist history in the full context.

Interesting that the sexuality wording originated at the same time that social principles were introduced in 1972 to the UMC. The article Linking Sexuality to Social Principles of Methodism explains how the 1972 wording of the Social Principles is linked to our methodist history and our commitment to principles; founded in something called the Social Creed of 1908. Long before UMC was created.

The Rev. Susan Henry-Crowe: "Actually the predecessor bodies of The United Methodist Church had for over 100 years had statements on peace, on world order, anti-slavery, fairness for all. So our history, since the time of Wesley really, there were always statements in the Books of Discipline about the Methodist commitments to social holiness and to justice. So, it's never not been there."

Note also that the 1972 wording of Social Principles was taken from the Evangelical United Brethren terminology. The conservative vs progressive dilemma has ALWAYS been part of methodism. And thus one can understand how sexuality has always been an integral part of our church family, our wholeness with God and at the core of ALL methodism. And a continuation of our dilemma today.

SEXUALITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN and WILL CONTINUE TO BE PART OF OUR PRINCIPLES

One can only wonder if the lead team members discussing disaffiliation fully understand the depth of the "Social Principles" within ALL Methodist -- the spark ignited by Wesley himself. To understand the soul of our Social Principles is to fully understand that "weariness" is part of ALL discussions and is a gift from our Lord. I fully understand those who say they are weary of these discussion.

I always taught my SS youth -- "GOD LIVES IN THE DILEMMAS of our lives". I stay committed to walk thru *OUR* dilemma together and in unity with ALL our BUMC/church family. Faith leaders do not grow weary of God's dilemmas'; they see them as opportunity for GROWTH in the discipleship of the whole flock.

I know my God and have learned to not grow weary in our discussions. For regardless of UMC, GMC, AME, EUB, or whatever organization the sexuality issue will continue to be discussed. For God's Word is not about the conversations.... it is part of our individual path to or own discipleship - of DOING no harm!

I have faith in BUMC. I have faith in our Lead Team. I have faith in my united family in BUMC. Finally, I leave 2 quotes:

  1. Pauls do no harm - (Rom. 13:10) - “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law”
  2. MLK: "Injustice *ANYWHERE* is a threat to justice everywhere".
Offered in Prayer, Grace and Peace... be Blessed.
