1. Let's be clear: “separation from” vs “separation in”

WESLEY:

It is more needful to do this, because among the numberless books that have been written upon the subject, both by the Romanists and Protestants, it is difficult to find any that define it in a scriptural manner. The whole body of Roman Catholics define schism, a separation from the Church of Rome; and almost all our own writers define it, a separation from the Church of England. Thus both the one and the other set out wrong, and stumble from the beginning. This will easily appear to any that calmly consider the several texts wherein the word "schism" occurs: from the whole tenor of which it is manifest, that it is not a separation from any Church, (whether general or particular, whether the Catholic, or any national Church,) but a separation in a Church.

PRAYER:

Rom: 14:13 - “Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.”

REFLECTION:

You will have to arrive at clarity on “separating from” vs “separation in” on the issue of UMC disaffiliation.  Wesley points out that starting with disaffiliation as a possiblity establishes a stumbling block “from the beginning”.  This block touches a nerve that could cause one to push away from the table and choose to not participate.   And in doing so, one separates from God’s dilemma that is being put upon our local “Church”.

Wesley puts the whole separation issue in context of large elephants dancing (Catholic/Protestant, Church of England/Rome, etc.) and the LONG history of prior schisms with all their energy forged.  Only to end up without awareness of the separation within our own hearts.  Be fully aware of the hand of God at work in your personal soul.    Yes, there are worldly and organizational actions that will happen.   Through it all be united with the Spirit.   Let your soul arrive at clarity, grace and peace.

Seek clarity in your soul and be aware of the choices God provides too you:

Local Church

Unify

Disaffiliate

My Soul

Unify

Clarity of One’s Mind

Disaffiliate

Let no stumbling block hinder the peace of your soul in Christ.
